• Course Objectives: To introduce the physical sensation of subtractive stone sculpting without the noise and vibration of heavy machinery.
• Learning Outcomes: Identify the natural bedding planes of soft stone; shape an abstract form using hand rasps; finish a piece to a high translucent sheen.
• Tools & Materials: French Limestone or Portland Stone; steel pitchers; point tools; claw/tooth chisels; iron carving hammers.
Rules
• Rules: Never strike soft stone with a heavy steel hammer; work stones wet when sanding to suppress airborne dust; clean tools after every session.
