• Topics Covered: Proportion mapping on wood blocks; heavy material removal; block-out strategies; grain navigation in hardwoods.
• Course Objectives: To train the eye to visualize a fully dimensional figure trapped inside a raw block of timber.
• Learning Outcomes: Successfully block out a 3D figure from multiple profile drawings; use heavy chisels without cracking the wood; sand and oil-finish a freestanding piece.
• Tools & Materials: Ash or Cherry logs; heavy wooden mallets; out-cannel gouges; wood rasps; linseed oil.
Rules
• Rules: Constantly rotate your work block to keep proportions even; check for internal wood rot before carving; wear safety glasses at all times.
