Motion & Timing (Animatic Production)
Motion & Timing is where static vision transforms into a living cinematic experience. This course focuses on the critical "rhythm" of storytelling, teaching you how to orchestrate a timeline that dictates the breath and energy of a scene. You will move beyond the single frame to master the technicalities of pacing, dynamic digital camera moves, and the integration of soundscapes that define the emotional core of a project. Using advanced tools like Adobe Premiere Pro and incorporating 3D space for complex parallax effects, you will learn to produce professional-grade animatics that serve as the definitive final blueprint for animation, live-action, and interactive media.
Instructor Profile
Prerequisites
Description
This course bridges the gap between static boards and final animation, focusing on pacing, sound, and 2026’s hybrid 2D/3D workflows.
Timeline Orchestration: Transitioning from panels to a timeline using tools like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
Pacing & Rhythm: Learning the "breath" of a scene—deciding exactly how long a shot should last to maximize emotional impact or comedic timing.
Dynamic Camera & Parallax: Implementing digital camera moves (pans, zooms, and tilts) and using multi-plane layers to create a sense of 3D depth.
Sound Design & Scratch Tracks: Integrating dialogue, "foley" (sound effects), and temp music to solidify the mood and "read" of the sequence.
Advanced Pre-Viz: Introduction to using 3D block-outs (using Blender) to establish complex perspectives and lighting for modern action sequences.
Course Rules
· Attendance Policy: Participation is mandatory; exceeding a 15% absence rate will result in an automatic failure of the course.
· Grading Criteria: Final grades are calculated based on a combination of consistent attendance, completion of practical assignments, and the quality of the final project.
· Punctuality & Professionalism: Arriving late or leaving early frequently is often penalized as a partial absence. Students are expected to treat the classroom like a professional studio, maintaining high standards of conduct and communication.
· Submission Deadlines: Late submissions for assignments or the final project are generally not accepted or are subject to significant grade deductions unless an official medical excuse is provided.
· Originality & Academic Integrity: All motion assets, animations, and project files must be the student's original work. The unauthorized use of AI-generated assets or "stealing" project templates without significant modification is strictly prohibited and can lead to immediate disqualification.
· Hardware & Software Requirements: Students must ensure their personal workstations meet the 2026 technical specifications for rendering (typically requiring high-end GPUs and 32GB+ RAM) to prevent project delays during the final rendering phase.
· In-Class Engagement: Active participation in peer critique sessions is often a mandatory component of the "Attendance" grade, requiring students to provide constructive feedback on others' work.
