Foundations of 2D Environment Design
This level is the "engine room" of your education, where you strip away complex textures to master the rigid physics of a 2D canvas. The focus is entirely on the mathematical side of art—perspective grids, scale, and structural anatomy—to ensure every environment you draw feels solid, believable, and walkable. By training your eyes to see the world in simple geometric volumes and a limited range of grey values, you build the "spatial logic" required to move from a hobbyist sketch to a professional production layout.
Focus: The "Rules of the World." This course builds the muscle memory needed to create believable spaces before adding color or complex narratives.
Instructor Profile
Prerequisites
Description
Learning Objectives:
o Master linear perspective (1, 2, and 3-point) to create structurally sound architectural spaces.
o Understand the "Rule of Thirds" and other compositional techniques to guide player/viewer attention.
o Learn to simplify complex world-building ideas into strong, readable silhouettes.
• Expected Outcomes:
o The ability to construct a believable indoor or outdoor set from any camera angle.
o A collection of black-and-white thumbnails showing a clear understanding of depth and scale.
• Required Materials:
o Hardware: Pen tablet (e.g., Wacom Intuos) and a computer with a high-resolution monitor.
o Software: Digital painting software like Adobe Photoshop or Krita.
o Analog (Optional): A3 layout paper and fine-line drawing pens for initial drafting.
Course Rules
· Attendance Policy: Participation is mandatory; exceeding a 15% absence rate will result in an automatic failure of the course.
· Grading Criteria: Final grades are calculated based on a combination of consistent attendance, completion of practical assignments, and the quality of the final project.
· Punctuality & Professionalism: Arriving late or leaving early frequently is often penalized as a partial absence. Students are expected to treat the classroom like a professional studio, maintaining high standards of conduct and communication.
· Submission Deadlines: Late submissions for assignments or the final project are generally not accepted or are subject to significant grade deductions unless an official medical excuse is provided.
· Originality & Academic Integrity: All motion assets, animations, and project files must be the student's original work. The unauthorized use of AI-generated assets or "stealing" project templates without significant modification is strictly prohibited and can lead to immediate disqualification.
· Hardware & Software Requirements: Students must ensure their personal workstations meet the 2026 technical specifications for rendering (typically requiring high-end GPUs and 32GB+ RAM) to prevent project delays during the final rendering phase.
· In-Class Engagement: Active participation in peer critique sessions is often a mandatory component of the "Attendance" grade, requiring students to provide constructive feedback on others' work.
