CHARACTER CONCEPTUALIZATION & ANATOMY
Introduction
This course introduces the 3D character pipeline by bridging artistic concept with structural form. Students learn to translate 2D reference sheets into balanced 3D character block-outs with correct human proportions.
Instructor Profile
Prerequisites
Description
Topics Covered
• Analyzing character design turnarounds for 3D translation
• Setting up front and side reference planes in 3D space
• Human skeletal landmarks and comparative body proportions
• Blocking out the character using 3D primitive shapes (ZSpheres/boxes)
• Establishing accurate volume distribution and silhouette balance
• Understanding gesture, weight distribution, and standard neutral poses (T-pose vs. A-pose)
• Defining muscle masses: torso, shoulders, and limbs at a foundational level
• Scale metrics and defining character height constraints
Course Objectives
• Deconstruct 2D character art into proportional 3D block-outs.
• Master the navigation of digital sculpting spatial interfaces.
• Implement foundational anatomical rules to avoid structural distortion.
Learning Outcomes
• Align 2D reference orthographics perfectly within a 3D viewport.
• Build a scale-accurate 3D human body block-out using primitive components.
• Shape clean primary volumes that match a target design brief.
Tools & Materials
• Digital sculpting software (Pixologic ZBrush or Blender)
• Computer workstation with a dedicated graphics card (GPU)
• Graphics drawing tablet with pen pressure sensitivity
• PureRef software for organizing anatomical references
